Situated on the southwest frontier of China, Yunan Province, called Yun or Dian for short, is not only land full of vitality, but one endowed with mysteries, charms, extensive resources as well as brilliant prospects. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially since the 1980's on, the rapid development economy has brought about great changes over this land and Yunan is forging ahead with vigorous strides, making its way toward the world. Yunan is one of the important provenance's of mankind.The long history of Yunan is witnessed by numerous remains ranging from prehistorically cultures, the bronze culture to ruins and relics left by such ancient kingdoms as Dian, Nanzhoa, Dali, Jinglongjindian and Ailao. All these contribute to make Yunnan an important and splendid part of the Chinses Culture. The splendid culture of Yunnan is noted for its multi-national constituents, as Yunnan has as its inhabitants-fifty-two out of the total number of fifty-six national minorities in China. Along with its long-standing reputation as a "kingdom of animals", "kingdom of plants", and " kingdom of the nonferrous metals". In terms of wild animals (vertebrates), there are as many as 1,638 kinds of animals living in this kingdom. |
