Guangzhou, known as Canton by
westerners, is the capital city of GuangDong
Province. it is one of China's 14 cpastal cities
opened to the outside world and the largest city
in South China. The minicipality of Guangzhou now
an area of some 16, 700 square kilometres and a
total population of over 6.8 million. The city
proper occupies 93 square kilometres and has more
than 3.3 million inhabitants. Guangzhou is also
an ancient city with a history of over 2,8000
years. |

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall:
built on the funds contributed by some overseas
Chinese and citizens of Guangzhou, the hall was
completed in 1931. There is a statue of Dr.Sun
Yat-sen at the entrance to the hall. Now it has
become a popular place for mass meetings. The South China Botanical Garden:
with a total area of over 300 hectares, it is the
second largest botanical garden in the world,
only next to the famous Canadian Royal Botanical
Garden. More than 2,000 kinds of tropical and
subtropical plants introduced from home and
abroad are cultivated here.
The Six Banyan Temple:
founded in 537 A.D with a history of more than
1,4000 years, this temple is known for its
Flowery Pogoda. With 9 storeys built on a
octagonal shape. Ascending it, one could get a
bird's eyeview of the city.
The Chen Clan Classical
Learning Academy: it wa built in 1890-1894
A.D noted for its artictic decorations of
architecture, this academy is an artistic complex
comprising 19 buildings of different sizes with
total floor space 6,400 square metres. All rooms,
halls, countryards and verandas, as well as its
doors, windows, balustrades and roof-ridges are
decorated with stone-carvings, wood-carvings,
brick-carvings, ceramic sculptures, lime
sculptures and iron-castings.
Five Storey
Tower: Built in 1380 A.D Zhenhai Tower is
well kwon ancient building in Guangzhou. It is 28
metres in height with five storeys, hence the
name of the Five-storey tower. Now it is open as
Guangzhou Municipal Museum and a good collection
of historical relics of this area is displayed
here.

Foshan:
is one of the four China-Famous historic towns,
having a history over 1,300 years. About 20
kilometres from Guangzhou, it is a clean and
beautiful city. There are the beautiful Zhongshan
Park, the Ancestral Temple (a historic spot in
local style, built in the Sung Dynasty) and
Shiwan Town, (known as the "Capital of
Pottery" in South China) in the city. With
its long history, and rich and beautiful folk
arts, Foshan is indeed a good place not only for
travel but also for art-enjoying. Eating: famous
for its delicious, tender, light and slick
cantonese dimsum. It have over 1,000 in variety
and is reputed as the best in China for its
disinctive making, delicate flavour and beautiful
colours.
Shopping:
Beijing road and Zhongshan road 5 are the busiest
commercial areas in the city. Guangzhou ivory
carving, jade carving, coloured porcelain and
embroidery all ahve enjoyed high reputaion both
at home and abroad.
Cultural
activities: Guangdong opera, music and folk
songs are rich in local colour, of which the
opera is the most prominent.The famous theatres
are Zhongshan Memorial Hall, Friendship Theatre
and Nanfang Theatres, where cultural bodies often
have stage performances. Various cultural
activities also takes palce in Cultural Park
every night.
